Over the years, we’ve figured out many of these "camping-style" tricks to steam dumplings using everyday kitchen tools. The key is to find tools that can serve as makeshift steamers. Of course, the result won’t be as ideal as using the real thing, but it's still much better than no dumplings at all! These tips are perfect if you’re learning how to steam dumplings without a steamer.

1. The Aluminum Foil Method (For a Pot or Wok)

This tried-and-true aluminum foil method is a go-to when learning how to steam dumplings without a steamer.

  • Fill a pot or wok with about 1 inch of water and bring it to a simmer.
  • Place a heatproof plate inside, elevated with three balls of aluminum foil (about the size of golf balls).
  • Lightly oil the plate, arrange the dumplings, and cover the pot with a lid.
  • Steam for 8–10 minutes until they are cooked through.
