A Culinary Bridge Between Two Worlds
Growing up in a Chinese household, dumplings were at the heart of family gatherings. The process of making them—rolling the dough, preparing the filling, carefully pleating each delicate dumpling—was as much about connection as it was about food. Traditional xiao long bao, or soup dumplings, have always been a staple in Chinese cuisine, their signature rich broth typically derived from pork or chicken stock. Our soup dumplings are a testament to that same tradition, crafted with care to bring the same warmth and comfort in every bite.
But when Julia married into an American family, I was introduced to a different kind of comfort food—slow-simmered vegetable broths, hearty stews, and rich plant-based flavors that brought their own sense of warmth and nourishment. Julia’s mother-in-law LuAnne’s homemade vegetable soup quickly became a favorite in our home, and it got Julia and Sandy thinking: What if we combined the essence of both traditions into something completely new?
The Birth of a One-of-a-Kind Dumpling

The challenge was clear—how do we create a vegetarian soup dumpling in the Bay Area that captures the deep, umami-rich flavors of its traditional counterpart without using meat?
The answer lay in slow-simmered mushrooms, roasted root vegetables, and carefully balanced aromatics. By borrowing techniques from both Chinese and Western cooking, we developed a broth that is layered, complex, and deeply satisfying.
Once we perfected the broth, the next step was creating the delicate handmade wrappers, ensuring they were thin enough to let the flavors shine yet strong enough to hold the precious soup inside.
Every dumpling is pleated by hand, just like my grandmother taught me, blending her time-honored skills with the fresh, plant-based ingredients inspired by my American family’s kitchen.
A Fusion of Flavors, A Taste of Home

Each bite of our vegetarian soup dumpling is a journey through cultures—a silky, handcrafted dumpling bursting with rich, aromatic vegetable broth.
The mushrooms add a deep, earthy umami, while Napa cabbage and scallions bring a touch of sweetness. The infusion of ginger and garlic rounds out the profile, creating a harmonious balance of flavors that pay tribute to both Chinese and Western influences.
Whether you’re a long-time dumpling lover or someone exploring plant-based dining, our vegan soup dumplings in San Francisco offer a fresh take on a beloved classic. This dish proves that plant-based food can be just as rich, comforting, and satisfying as any traditional version.
